30. Obstetric estimate of gestation at delivery

Gestation is a term that describes the time between conception and birth during which a baby grows and develops in the mother’s uterus. Because so many important milestones take place during this period to indicate a pregnancy is progressing normally, it is common for women to track their pregnancies to ensure these milestones are hit at the appropriate time. Gestational age is the usual way for describing the age of the pregnancy, or how far along it is. Usually expressed as a combination of weeks and days, gestational age counts from the first day of the mother’s last menstrual period to the present, so it technically includes about two weeks during which the woman was not pregnant. Gestational age helps guide prenatal care. In addition, it yields an expected due date and is the method most physicians use for dating a pregnancy. Gestational age is different from fetal age, which is the number of weeks that have passed since conception.

Gestational age is defined as the number of weeks that have elapsed between the first day of the last normal menstrual period not presumed time of conception and the date of delivery, irrespective of whether the gestation results in a live birth or a fetal death.

Fetal biometric measurements used to calculate gestational age and estimated date of delivery (“due date” or EDD) will be reviewed here.

There are no notes to display. Add a note. The type of supporting evidence is identified and graded for each recommendation see the “Major Recommendations” field. Possible reassignment of dates when significant fetal pathology such as fetal growth restriction or macrosomia result in a discrepancy between ultrasound biometric and clinical gestational age. Such reassignment may lead to the omission of appropriate—or the performance of inappropriate—fetal interventions.

The existing evidence is conflicting and does not allow to make a recommendation for or against use of the clinical preventive action; however, other factors may influence decision-making. There is insufficient evidence in quantity or quality to make a recommendation; however, other factors may influence decision-making. This document reflects emerging clinical and scientific advances on the date issued and is subject to change.

This gestational age calculator offers information on the probable ovulation date and fertility window when conception likely took place , the estimated gestational age in weeks and days with a description of current fetal development and the estimated due date based on a week delivery.

Human gestation is estimated to take days from conception date or days from the last period. Last menstrual period dating must be made with caution as cycle irregularities may make the prediction inaccurate. Best dating of pregnancy is done through physical exams and ultrasound.

To compare the accuracy of the reported date of the last menstrual period LMP with that of symphysis-fundal height SFH in the estimation of gestational age GA , using an ultrasound US scan as reference. Gestational age was concurrently assessed by the 3 methods in this prospective, population-based, pregnancy-outcome study conducted in Hyderabad, Pakistan, from June 18, , through August 31, , with women between 20 and 26 weeks of a singleton pregnancy.

Knowing gestational age GA accurately is essential for optimal prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. The expected date of delivery, correct diagnosis of preterm or post-term labor, and differentiation between premature birth and intrauterine growth restriction rest on the estimated GA, as do prenatal counseling and interventions for poor fetal growth as well as the avoidance of unnecessary hospitalization, testing, and interventions such as induction of labor and tocolytic treatment [ 1 , 2 , 3 ].

Furthermore, a close estimation of GA informs research toward improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Once the estimated due date (EDD) is established, it should rarely be changed, as the determination of gestational age is.

Gestation is defined as the time between conception and birth. A fetus grows and develops in the womb during gestation. The gestation period is how long a woman is pregnant. Most babies are born between 38 and 42 weeks of gestation. Babies born before 37 weeks are considered premature. Babies born after 42 weeks are called postmature.

Where your baby is in their development — such as whether their fingers and toes have formed — is tied to gestational age. Gestational age is measured in weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period. This means that your last period counts as part of your pregnancy. Your doctor can also determine gestational age using an ultrasound or after delivery. After birth, gestational age is determined using the Ballard Scale, which assesses the physical maturity of your baby.

Gestational age is divided into two periods : embryonic and fetal.

Methods for Estimating the Due Date

Because the human egg is capable of fertilization for only 12 to 24 hours after ovulation the date of ovulation may be taken as being the date of conception. However, ultrasound determination of the date of ovulation has the same imprecision as does the ultrasound estimate of the gestational age and, therefore, a precise date of conception cannot usually be determined as with in vitro fertilization. In addition, although a woman is most likely to become pregnant if she has sex on the day of ovulation conception may also occur from live sperm still in her reproductive tract on the day of ovulation if she had sex for up to five days before ovulation [26,27].

The due date may be estimated by adding days 9 months and 7 days to the first day of the last menstrual period LMP. This is the method used by “pregnancy wheels”. The accuracy of the EDD derived by this method depends on accurate recall by the mother, assumes regular 28 day cycles, and that ovulation and conception occurs on day 14 of the cycle.

Gestation is the period of time between conception and birth. During this time, the baby grows and develops inside the mother’s womb. Gestational age is the common term used during pregnancy to describe how far along the pregnancy is. It is measured in weeks, from the first day of the woman’s last menstrual cycle to the current date. A normal pregnancy can range from 38 to 42 weeks.

Infants born before 37 weeks are considered premature. Infants born after 42 weeks are considered postmature. If the baby’s gestational age findings after birth match the calendar age, the baby is said to be appropriate for gestational age AGA.
